![]() Nudibranchs are a type of sea slug. Sea slugs, like slugs on land, are snails without shells that live in the sea. Most sea slugs are tiny—only about one-half inch long—although one species averages a foot in length. Without the protection of a shell, a nudibranch may look like a slowly moving meal to a faster animal. These gorgeous colorful creatures eat poisonous sea sponges and instead of getting sick or dying, they safely stores the poison in their own body. If another animal tries to eat the nudibranch, that animal will get a mouthful of poison. .................................................................................................................... Another amazing thing about these photos is how Doubilet got them. Most of these nudibranchs are less than an inch long. He set up a tiny underwater studio with a seamless white background so the sea slugs didn't have to be removed from the water:
